Case Study Report Chapter 11

1.Statement of the problem
A.Definition: Jack had nerd personality in high school. After he became a college student, he joined group “Gamma Delta Chi”. In the initiation, he drunk several alcohols to be a member of Gamma Delta Chi.

B.Analysis: The main character “Jack Donohue” is a freshman at Colorado State College. He is study computer science. He was a kind of nerd person in his high school period. He wants to be cool and he joined Gamma Delta Chi which is the most famous in the college. The initiation of the group was drinking beer all night. He accepted for several bottle of hard liquors, after that he lost his sense. He should choose to go out for Gamma Delta Chi or to stay.

2.Suggestion of Possible Solutions

A.Solution1: He has to tell the situation of initiation to the college office or security. Otherwise, he will drink more alcohol in the next party, because Gamma Delta Chi is an intoxicating world.

B.Solution2: He had better adjust this culture of Gamma Delta Chi quickly, and then he will popular and cool in Gamma Delta Chi.

C.Solution3: Suggest to the leader of Gamma Delta Chi to remove this kind of initiation in next time and reduce the time of having the party.

3.Evaluation of Possible Solutions

A.Solution1
1.Advantages: No more drink. He will back to as a normal college freshman.
2.Disadvantages: No popular. Nobody will pay attention to him.

B.Solution2
1.Advantages: To be popular and cool in the Gamma Delta Chi, and change his personality.
2.Disadvantages: He will lose his own personality and bad for health.

C.Solution3
1.Advantages: Change Gamma Delta Chi as a good and formal group and it also good for health, because of less party.
2.Disadvantages: He probably kicks out from Gamma Delta Chi. It is dangerous.

4. Selection of a Solution

A. Choice: Solution 1

B. Justification: I think that he does not have to change his personality and to be popular like that. There are many ways to be popular in the college. He has to tell the truth and let college judge them. After that he should find another ways to be popular. For example, join a musical instrument club, or some sports clubs

Film Analysis Form

Summary and Analysis

Dawson is a good student. He always gets a high grade on exam. He had a girlfriend. One day, the girl friend came to him and gave the exactly exam about PSAT. PAST was very important exam and it is only take once, but Dawson did not want to take the exam papers, because he is honest. However, he takes the exam papers from his girl friend. He brings the papers to the school. At that time, fire alarm sounded. So, he had to leave his stuff in the class room. After he comes back, the papers were gone. He tried to find the paper, but he couldn’t. One day before take the exam, he fought with his friend Pacey, because of the problem of girl friend and the lost papers. In the next day, they gave the exam up and they came out and discuss why they did fight. In episode 15, Joey painted a picture on the wall. She was good at painting. She finished painting, and at the showing day, the picture was screwed up by someone. Her friend finally found the culprit. The culprit was white and rich and his father is a policeman. He is often breaking the school’s rule. So the president of school, he decided to kick him out of the school. Also, Andie told to the president of school that she plagiarized, but he forgive her, because she is honest and she knows her fault.

Relation to Case Study

In the case study from chapter 9 and chapter 10 and in this movie, I can see the big part of the plagiarism and small part of racism. In general in this movie, Andie stole the exam paper and plagiarized on the PSAT and get a high score. However, she recognized her fault and told the truth to the school president. Also the episode 15, the culprit told that he is white and rich, so he doesn’t think he have to following the school rules in front of the black school president. In my opinion, it is a part of the racism.

Reaction to Film

I was very interested in this movie, because I have watched the film that related to American high school. I could learn the American high school student’s informal communication and there also has action, sport, love and truth. This drama was fresh to me and good to watch, except their takings were very fast. I was little bit hard to understand. In the next time watch this drama, I will try to understand and listen carefully what they saying.

Definition of Plagiarism

Definition of Plagiarism

I am going to describe my country’s rules about a writer’s citation of sources by answering the several questions. In my country, there has lots of citation such as a news, stories and books. In my opinion, they do not use the considered words in the property of the writer. They almost use easy words when they do a citation of sources and they almost do use the footnotes after the words of the source that where did they get the information. Sometimes, it could be a short summary of the news, stories and books and sometimes it could be an opinion of them. Actually, they do not usually use quotation marks. If there has any important words or represent sentences of the essay on the essay, then they do use on the sentence. And then, some of people might use a bibliography or list of references on the citation of sources, but, most of people do not use bibliography and list, because it is not too general and annoying to them.

Actually, I did not contact with many of essay which is related to plagiarism and citation in the United States and Korea, but according to my experience, Korea and the United States’ plagiarism and citation of sources are not very different. In my opinion, both countries many students are trying to avoid that is not plagiarism. Some of Koreans are often forget to copy the essay, news and books without citing the source, but, broken rule for citation is not a big deal, so it is not a big issue and problem in college, but in the United States, citing source is very important. If you do not citing source when you copy something, it may change as a plagiarism. So, when you copy someone’s essay or idea, you must citing the source and be careful.

Witness Reaction to Film

I really enjoyed this movie very much because it was the almost first action and thriller movie between we watched in the last semester. I like this story and inversion at the middle of this movie. Even though it is a nineteen eighty’s movie but it was awesome, something like their expression, and acting. I could learn the American’s life in the past twenty years. I wish watch a movie which is similar one in the next time.

Witness Relation to Case Study

This movie is related on Chapter 12 which is Dita story. The main character of Witness is the policeman John. He is a normal American. He felt culture shock from Amish people. There are lots of different things were different between them. Even though, they are living in the same country, because of tribe culture, he felt culture shock. In the Dita case, she is from Indonesia and she also felt culture shock. In my opinion, whoever, even who you are, if you are lived in the different culture and environment, then will feel culture shock.

Witness Summary and Analysis

The main character of this movie is a policeman, a mother and a boy. The boy’s name is Samuel, the policeman’s name is John and the mother’s name is Rachel. Samuel and Rachel went to Philadelphia to go to travel. They were waiting for the train. During the waiting Samuel went to rest room. At rest room, he saw a situation that two person were killing a man. So Samuel became only one person who saw the situation of the case. John asked him several things about them. John tried to find them with Samuel for several days. But they could not find them. One day, Samuel saw the picture which is the policeman picture collection and said “he is him.” But the boss of the police office and lots of policeman were same side with the murderer. The policemen were trying to kill them. They escape to a place where Amish living. John and they were lived together and helped them. He felt culture shock between Amish people and normal American. Evaluation of Their acting

I am going to evaluate the No. B’s acting. I think, they did well but, there has several problems. Someone acted extra one (not necessary character). That is made me confused. Also, they act with script out. It is very obviously thing but, I mean, they did a good job. That was almost extemporaneous speaking. Therefore, some of parts were not perfect and not smooth. I feel sad about that. Also, the other problem is their decision. The three decisions were very unfair and not advantage to the main character that have the problem with her roommate. The only one thing that I remember is go back to your country. It is too extreme decision. Then, if I have a same problem with the acting, it means, just bear the entire problem and annoying things until my roommate going out? Or just let me go back to my country? It is not a good decision. The decisions were made me angry. If the team is changed their decision, then the acting was more perfect and nice.

Compare Dita and Masika Z. Smith

I am going to compare the case of adjust in the United States which is Dita story and Masika Z. Smith story. There are a lot of similarity and differences. First of all, I will talk about the differences about two cases. They are come from different places. Dita is come from Indonesia and Masika is come from Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa. Their period of living in USA also different, Masika have living in the United States for seven years. And Dita have living in the United States only for one semester. Moreover, Masika was married with a white man. But, Dita is only a student. That means, Masika has a family in the United States. Actually, she made her family in the United States. But Dita has no family in the United States. She is alone. Obviously she did not marry. There has a difference of them about their place where they live in the United States. Masika is West Texas. And Dita is Boston for studying. Masika came to the United States for a bachelor's degree in psychology from a small liberal arts college in West Texas. And Dita had been awarded a full scholarship by the Indonesian government to attend college in the United States. According to Masika’s talking with counselor and she began believing in her ability and herself. She had a passion to study her own and her work. But Dita was not. Because of her feeling of tired and hard, she still got a low grades on her quizzes, tests, and her essay with talking with her professor or discussion out. It means, Dita had not her passion to study very hard at the college.

But, there has also lots of similarity on both of them. First of all, they both are international student. Actually, they are not Native American. Therefore they do not have the perfect English skill yet. And they are women. There are a lot of similarity between their feeling of adjust and adapt to the United States. They both were felt it is not suitable and appropriate about them and their culture. Such as they were had problem about foods, weather, and no friends in there. That mean is they were lonely. They were also had a problem on communicate with their friends, professor, and roommate. I think they actually did not enjoy and love about living in the United States. Obviously, they both were felt about culture shock during the move to the United States. Feelings related with this phase included shock, scare, disappointment, anger and confusion. And they were hard to understand their class. They had conversation with counselor for get some suggestions about how to adjust better to the United States. But the results were not very good. They are hoping to change their life better adjust in the United States. From the starting to the ending, they always carry, worry about their America life. And also think about what is the problem on them.

Smoke Signals Film Analysis Report

Summary and Analysis

Thomas and Victor were main character of Smoke Signal and they were Native American. Victor’s father was like to drink alcohol and play with friends. He used to like to drink everyday and his wife interrupted him and he got upset and left his home. And then he has not come back. But, there has one more reason why he left his home. They took the bus and walk several days. Finally, they arrived a house where Victor’s bone is. And they talked with a woman who living in the house. The woman was loved Victor’s father and she told Victor about his anxious and his regret. Victor heard the story of his father and went to back to his hometown. He thought his father was not a only like drinking alcohol. His father was really caring about his family. Victor knew the truth and the love of his father.

Relation to Case Study

In the “Smoke Signal” the main characters are Native American. They felt racism in the bus and somewhere in the movie. Because of they are Indian, the bus’s people’s attention were quite not good. The people’s eyes were looks like looking a stranger or beggar. Also, they have stolen their chair from an American while they went to restroom. In the chapter 10, the attention of students to look the Francine and Tony couple was quite not good. I think, there could have much racism anywhere in the whole world.

Reaction to Film

I was really moving on this movie. This movie was the best movie which I have seen movies since I came to Kutztown University. There speech was very easy to understand. Their speech was very easy to understand, there also has a moral. In my opinion, the moral is feel happy when you with your family together. Victor knew the truth of father and his love. He thought the only reason that his father left is alcohol. But that wasn’t. He was feeling sorry for their family and Thomas’s family. He couldn’t live in the town with his crime even that was an accident. But he couldn’t accept it. I think, the movie was very great. I want to watch a movie something like this in the next time.

4.Selection of a Solution

A.Choice: I choose solution 2.

B.Justification: If they break up, then they would not get any injure or stress anymore. If they do not have a deep relationship, then it is good time to consider their relationship to break up. But, if they really love each other, they could date other side of the school or I could break up during the period of the university. Then, they can love after the graduation of the university. The most important thing is their safety.
